Silicone Send Back

Send back silicone products that are no longer of use and we will repurpose them. We will take any brand of silicone. Silicone Send Back is the first post-consumer silicone repurposing project in the Southern Hemisphere.

At nil, we are committed to creating products that don't end up in landfill. We believe in leaving no waste from our products. We try our best to design and make our products to last (or made with biodegradable materials) and then put in place systems to enable products to be reused and recycled when they are worn out.

We are setting up a pilot project to get the Silicone Send Back repurposing started. We're working with a processor and expert scientist to test the silicone - as it is an advanced material! And then we'll start working with local designers and artists to turn unwanted silicone into cool new designs here NZ.

You can send any food grade silicone products to us at our Wellington Showroom or find a collection point closer to you.

Get $10 from nil when you post in your old silicone 

To get this new programme off to a great start we need to mobilise our nil customer community. Send in your old silicone products directly to nil and we will provide you a $10 credit to use on our website - our way of saying thanks for looking after the environment and supporting Silicone Send Back.

So, check your cupboards, search through that nappy bag no longer in use and ask your friends - hunt out any food grade silicone products you’re no longer using and send it to us.

In your kitchen this might be an old spatula or silicone muffin cases, or a baby spoon or sippy cup lid (if it is silicone, not hard plastic). You can send back the silicone spout of an old drink bottle, or baby bottle teats no longer being used - please just send back the silicone part only.

How to register for the Silicone Send Back at nil

Return any food-grade silicone product you are no longer using to us at nil in Wellington by following these steps:

1. Complete the Silicone Send Back form here to let us know you are sending silicone in and provide your email address (so we can be in touch about your $10 credit)
2. Pop the items into a suitable bag or box to post to us - this could be a recycled cardboard box, paper bag, envelope or recycle a courier bag
3. Include a note inside your package with your name and email address that you entered in the registration form (step 1 above) so we can email you with the $10 credit to use at nil
4. Label your box/bag/envelope correctly and send it back to us at: nil products, 471 Adelaide Road, Berhampore, Wellington 6023.

When we receive your returned silicone we will sort it and send on to our new processing partner to trial repurposing  the silicone. And we will send you a $10 credit to use online, to thank you for being planet-friendly and helping our environment.

Product Stewardship at nil

The nil team are proud to be leading the Silicone Send Back project. This is part of our product stewardship programme, which also includes taking back stainless steel and bamboo products no longer being used and returned beeswax wraps.

Silicone is a great material to use for any products touching food, for baby or for personal care products - it is stable and safe. Which is why, here at nil, we use it for baby feeders, teething soother toys and food storage products. Silicone is made from silica- which is sand! Silicone products are long lasting and can be used time and time again, making them a more sustainable product choice compared with plastic.

Silicone Send Back is supported by the Sustainable Business Network and The Aotearoa Product Stewardship Campaign. nil is joined by other switched on NZ businesses participating in the Silicone Send Back project, including the Wā Collective, Caliwoods, Reusabowl and more.
