Plastic Free July isn't over yet. But it's close.
You've made it this far. Maybe you're feeling proud. Maybe you're feeling tired. Maybe you're counting down the days until you can buy a packet of chips without guilt.
Here's the thing: none of that matters. What matters is what happens after.
Because the whole point of Plastic Free July isn't the month itself. It's what you carry forward. It's the habits that stick. The swaps that become automatic. The small shifts that add up over time.
You're not perfect. Good.
Nobody is. If you forgot your reusable bag once (or twelve times), it's fine. If you caved and bought a plastic-wrapped snack because you were hungry and tired and it was there, it's fine. If you did really well for three weeks and then had a bad day, it's fine.
This isn't about perfection. It's about staying in the game.
What happens after matters more.
The real test of a habit isn't during a challenge. It's when the challenge ends. It's August and September and February when you're tired and stressed and the plastic is everywhere and nobody's watching.
That's where real change happens.
So use the final days of July not as a finish line, but as a springboard. Ask yourself: what actually worked? What felt easy? What felt hard? What can you see yourself keeping?
Because the best swap is the one you actually stick with.
One swap at a time.
Pick one thing from this month that you want to keep. Just one. Maybe it's your reusable coffee cup. Maybe it's produce bags. Maybe it's the shampoo bar you were sceptical about but actually loved.
Do that one thing until it becomes automatic. Then add another.
Slow wins. That's the goal.
Normalise the imperfect.
You're going to forget. You're going to need a plastic bag sometimes. You're going to buy something in packaging you can't avoid.
That's okay. That's life. The goal isn't to eliminate every piece of plastic forever. The goal is to ask: "Is there a better way to do this?" And if there isn't right now—just let it go. You'll do better next time.
Find your people.
It's easier to keep going when you know you're not the only one. Find other people who care. Talk about it. Share your wins and your fails. It's not about being the most sustainable person in the room. It's about being part of a community that's trying together.
No pressure. Just progress.
You don't need to be perfect. You just need to keep showing up. Every small step matters. Every swap you stick with matters. Every time you choose the slightly better option, even when it's inconvenient, matters.
So here's to the final few days of July. And here's to everything that comes after.
Keep going. Not because you have to. Not because you're perfect. But because every small step adds up. And because you care. And because that's enough.
One day at a time. One swap at a time. No pressure. Just progress.
